Drugged driving more common than drunk driving in US

A man riding his bicycle on a rural road in the state of Ohio died after being struck by a car. The cyclist was familiar with the route he was travelling and was not at fault in the accident. According to police officials, the cyclist was the victim of a drugged driver.

This fatality is another example of a growing trend that shows drugged driving has overtaken drunk driving as one of the major dangers on the roads, as noted in a recent nationwide report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, based in Washington, DC. The report found that illegal drugs were present in 43% of fatally injured drivers who had been tested post-mortem, compared to 37% who tested positively for alcohol levels that exceeded the legal limit.

A recent survey of Ohio motorists conducted by the motor club, American Automobile Association (AAA), came to the same conclusion. The AAA survey noted that most drivers in Ohio now viewed driving under the influence of drugs as more of a threat than driving while under the influence of alcohol.

In a news release, Cheryl Parker, regional spokesperson for the AAA, stated, “The new statistics mirror what the public is already feeling which is the dire threat to their safety posed by drugged driving. This is especially significant when you consider the number of years it took to get the public to fully understand the dangers posed by drinking and driving.”
