Dubai police deploy drug awareness robot

Dubai Police have enlisted a robot to assist in raising public awareness of the harm caused by abusing drugs.

The robot is named Amal, a word that translates as ‘hope’ in English. The robot will reach out to people in various public settings, informing them of the potential dangers that can result from drug abuse.

Dubai Police posted a video on social media, with the robot giving this message to viewers, “Hello humans. My name is Amal, and I am a humanoid robot. I want to help humans fight against drug abuse. That is why I’m volunteering in Dubai Police. I am here to spread awareness and give you hope. I can’t wait to meet all of you.”

Lt Colonel Abdullah Al Khayat, the director of awareness at Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department, stated that the robot will begin interacting with the public on a trial basis by the end of this month, and will officially begin operating later in the year. He also indicated that his department planned to use the robot to raise awareness about illegal drug use in shopping malls and schools, as well as having it take part in anti-drug campaigns.

Amal is not the only robot in use by Dubai Police. They have also deployed an autonomous Robocop, the first operational robot police officer in the world.

The Robocop uses the latest smart technologies, including artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, to perform tasks. Its facial recognition software can assist the police in identifying and apprehending individuals who have broken the law.
