Substance abuse behaviour leads to the police taking action

The police in Leicester are taking action against rowdy citizens who have started to gather in the city’s historic area of New Walk.

A reported rise in the number of incidents involving drunks in the New Walk area may be due to street drinkers moving there after the police clamped down on antisocial behaviour in Humberstone Gate and Charles Street. As well as alcohol causing the rowdiness, it is believed that new psychoactive substances, formerly known as legal highs, are also in use. The substance known as Black Mamba has been cited as being used there. This is believed to have been a causal factor in several users exhibiting erratic behaviour or becoming ill in the centre of the city.

The deputy commander of city centre police, Sergeant Andy Cooper, said, “We had the same issue in New Walk and Museum Square last summer. People were gathering there to drink and, in some cases, to use psychoactive substances. We executed a drugs warrant on a property in the area because we believed it was linked to the anti-social behaviour and the situation improved massively. We are keeping an eye on the situation in New Walk and are talking to residents about the actions we are taking.”

The police have searched two properties in the area, and took possession of a small haul of suspected psychoactive substances, but did not make any arrests.
