Blue Cross Blue Shield home treatment now available

There is a new substance abuse treatment programme by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, which is great news for people shut behind their doors due to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order.

A statement, released on Wednesday, contained information and details about the programme.

In short, health care providers will work with the insurance provider to rework and repackage the existing substance abuse treatment services and put them into a virtual environment.

Dr William Beecroft, medical director and behavioural health specialist at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, said that this solution is designed for the people who need it, wherever they, may live.

He has a positive outlook on the future, convinced that the approach outlined above has the potential to change the status quo nature of treatment for substance use disorder as we progress.

Specific telehealth treatment plans would differ for each patient and provider, but could include the following:

  • Initial medical check-up
  • Virtual group therapy
  • Treatment, either facilitated or medication-assisted
  • Sessions with a psychotherapist
  • Daily check-ins with social workers, nurses, and doctors
  • Attending online meetings hosted by Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Home delivery for Point-Of-Care supplies

These kinds of services are usually provided by hospital and outpatient programmes, but current circumstances call for delivery via telehealth.

Veterans suffering from substance use disorders have had the chance to receive similar treatment in the past, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs.
