Local authorities winning the drug war in Plymouth

The authorities in Plymouth are tackling drug problems in the region by removing troublesome drug-taking neighbours.

The crackdown is part of an initiative by Plymouth City Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team, and Devon and Cornwall Police. The most recent target for their crackdown was a house in Plymouth, where both guns and drugs were found. The house was closed down, increasing the list of other houses and flats shut by the police and the council during recent months. The authorities warn that the same will happen to anti-social and drug-taking residents in the region should they not address their behaviour.

Plymouth council’s cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, Councillor Dave Downie, initiated the crackdown earlier this week, closing a drugs and sex den on Grenville Road in St Jude’s. He said he was pleased that the partnership had managed to successfully close such a place and that it demonstrated the authorities’ commitment to tackling both antisocial behaviour and crime to make Plymouth a safer place to live.

He said, “Drug use and drug dealing, and the crime and anti-social behaviour associated with it, ruins people’s lives and we will take tough action to address these issues. We will continue to work with Devon and Cornwall Police and landlords of all tenures to tackle this, and we thank them for their continued support.”Mr Downie also encouraged residents to report any anti-social behaviour, stating that names need not be given.
