Britain is party drug capital of the world

A UN report into the global use of drugs has revealed that Britain is the party drugs capital of the world. According to the report, the main reason for the UK being ranked so highly is due to cocaine and ecstasy usage.

Scotland has the worst cocaine problem in the world, with a greater percentage of the population abusing this drug on a regular basis that anywhere else. According to the latest statistics, one in 40 Scots admitting to taking cocaine.

England is not far behind, though, with one in 50 people admitting to using cocaine. In the global league for cocaine use, Scotland ranks first followed by Spain, America, Australia and Uruguay; England and Wales sit sixth on the list.

As far as the party drug ecstasy is concerned, Scotland ranks third in the world. Australians and New Zealanders are using most of this drug.

Global variations in drug usage may largely be determined by trade routes for cocaine. Most of the cocaine that enters the UK comes from Central America, whereas ecstasy is a synthetic chemical and can be made anywhere.

Following this report, several celebrities have asked the UK government to end its war on drugs. Russell Brand, Sir Richard Branson and Sting signed an open letter to David Cameron to launch a review of Britain’s drug policy.

The argument is simple: the current policy is not working, people are still using drugs and the war on drugs is criminalising users rather than providing counselling and care.

The government spends £1.5-£2.5 billion annually on policing drugs.

A Scottish government spokesman has dismissed the report as inaccurate and said that recent surveys have shown that drug use is in decline in Scotland.
