Coronavirus pandemic driving up US online alcohol sales

It seems that the coronavirus pandemic has made it easier to access alcohol than it is to buy everyday essentials, such as toilet paper.

Still, many US governors share the opinion that alcohol sales are a vital business in these times of need.

As accessibility restrictions are loosening, little remains in the way of home delivery.

Now, people are buying larger quantities of alcohol, and doing so more often.

Comparing the week ending on 14th March to the same period one year ago, the Nielsen figures suggest that:

  • Online sales went up by 42%.
  • Wine sales increased by 27.6%, with spirits a fraction behind (26.4%).
  • Cider, beer, and malt beverages went up by 14%.
  • Three-litre wine box sales increased by 53%, while 24-unit beer packs increased by 24%.

Although the current situation means that people have less money, their stress levels are rising, which increases the likelihood of them drinking more to seek peace of mind.

The result is that they are buying affordable alcohol in larger quantities.

But this is far from being the only problem.

For example, alcohol abuse suppresses the immune system, which is a major cause of concern during a pandemic such as the one we now face. Another concern is many workplaces already ramping up their in-house alcohol tests to maintain safety on site.

Also, there is a known correlation between home consumption and an increase in violence.

Child abuse and domestic violence cases may also increase in numbers.
