Mandatory drug testing at Ohio Catholic school

Ohio’s Catholic high school has introduced an important change – from the first day of 2020, drug testing has become mandatory for all students.

The new policy states that each student attending Stephen T Badin High School, near Cincinnati, will be tested at least once a year for the presence of drugs.

Not everyone agrees with the new policy.

Jamie Folks, from Susquehanna Township, believes it is wrong for the school to have such power, saying that too many rights are taken away from people already.

The school administrators explained that the policy aims to help students who need it.

Parents are invited to be involved in the process as much as possible.

Punishment depends on how many times a student fails the drug test.

Tarique Campbell, from Harrisburg, noted that drug tests are standard in some fields of work.

According to Campbell, though, schools should not follow suit – after all, the students are just kids.

But he believes it could have a role in stopping underage drug abuse, so there appears to be a positive side.

Pennsylvania’s state Supreme Court ruled that random drug testing aimed at students is unconstitutional, as defined under the state search and seizure law- at least without showing a specific need.
