Nevada receives $333 million to fight the opioid crisis

Nevada’s Department of Justice has allocated $333 million to help fight the opioid crisis.

Principal deputy assistant attorney general Sullivan believes it has already destroyed too many lives and is one of the deadliest epidemics in the nation’s history.

The epidemic claims 130 lives daily (opioid-related overdoses).

Based on this, the Department of Justice has decided to make fighting opioid addiction a national priority.

The funding will go towards:

  • Recovery assistance
  • Forensic science services
  • Research
  • Comprehensive treatment
  • Preventive services

Emergency treatment professionals, law enforcement officers, and emergency responders will use the funds well when formulating a response to overdoses.

The remaining funds will go towards forensic labs’ capacity extension, opioid-related research, and prescription drug abuse.

$44 million will go towards establishing, assisting, and expanding adult drug courts.

The Las Vegas Township Justice Court was awarded $651,324 under this program.

It’s not only the adult population that will get the much-needed help, but the juvenile drug treatment court programs are also receiving a financial boost.

Finally, $17 million will go towards supporting the opioid-related forensic activities under the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program.

Medical examiners and forensic laboratories will use the funds to understand the ever-increasing opioid-related deaths.

The demand for their services is enormous, even to the point of putting extra workload on other labs.
